Magic Sands Beach Parking: What Renters Need to Know

Short answer: No parking fee is listed by the county and traveler guides describe it as free, but the parking is limited and fills quickly. Arrive early.

Magic Sands beach parking is the hard part of a small, popular beach on Ali’i Drive south of downtown Kailua-Kona. Here is where renters actually park, what is free, and what changed at the lot next door.

Is Magic Sands beach parking free?

The Hawai‘i County page for Magic Sands Beach Park lists restrooms, barbecue pits and wheelchair access at 77-6474 Ali’i Drive. I found no parking fee on it. Traveler guides describe the parking as free, and the same guides say it is limited and fills quickly. No county source I found lists a pay station.

Where renters park

There is no big lot. Traveler reports describe a small lot at the beach, a gravel lot across Ali’i Drive, and spaces along the road shoulder. Which of those is open can change from one visit to the next, so go by the signs you see that day. Read any roadside sign before you leave a rental on the shoulder.

The lot next door that was closed for years

Magic Sands sits beside La‘aloa Bay Beach Park. The county closed that park’s paved 27-stall lot in May 2017 to protect Haukālua Heiau and other cultural sites, and it stayed closed until March 28, 2024. The reopened lot is smaller. Reporting on the 2022 plan put it at 11 spaces, two of them accessible. A guide that describes “the big lot next door” may be describing the old layout.

When it fills up

No official source gives a fill time. Guides call it a limited-parking beach that fills fast, so treat arriving early as the safe plan. If the lots are full, come back later in the afternoon instead of circling, because circling on Ali’i Drive is slow for everyone.

Check these before you drive down

  • Lifeguards: the county says the beach park is staffed daily, 9:30 AM to 4:45 PM, by Hawai‘i Fire Department Ocean Safety.
  • The sand: the beach is nicknamed “Disappearing Sands” because, per Wikipedia, storms wash the sand out several times a year and leave bare lava rock. Look at the surf before you commit to the drive.
  • The drive: it is about 4.5 miles south of downtown Kailua-Kona on Ali’i Drive, a narrow road that moves slowly, so allow extra time.

Landing in Kona first? The Kona Airport rental car guide covers pickup, and whether you need a rental car on the Big Island covers the bigger decision. For planning the rest of your days, see how long it takes to drive around the Big Island.
