Short answer: Molokai has very few rental cars. Alamo has a location at Molokai Airport (MKK), and the main local company is Molokai Outdoors, rated 4.9 on Google, with a 3-day minimum. Book as early as you can.
A Molokai car rental works more like renting a car on Lanai than on Maui or Oahu. There is no rental car center and no row of brand counters, and visitors on travel forums regularly report Molokai rental cars selling out. If you arrive without a booking, you may not find one.
Who rents cars on Molokai
Alamo lists a rental location at Molokai Airport (MKK) on its website.
Molokai Outdoors is the local option, rated 4.9 on 34 Google reviews (October 20, 2026). On its car rental page, it says:
- It is locally owned and has rented cars on Molokai for more than 25 years.
- The fleet includes Ford Escape compact SUVs that seat five, plus trucks.
- There is a 3-day minimum, unless you book last minute or clear it with them.
- Its new base is at 1529 Kamehameha V Highway, about 2 miles east of Kaunakakai and a quarter mile past Hotel Molokai. While it finishes moving there, phone is the best way to reach it.
- If the car is damaged and can’t be used, it charges for loss of use, so check that your insurance covers rentals. It also names a carrier selling cover for $9.99 a day.
- Last-minute cancellations hurt a small company, so give notice if your plans change.

Where you can drive
Molokai Outdoors says only its Jeeps and trucks are allowed on certain unpaved routes. It singles out the road to the Waikolu lookout: a single-lane state road off the paved network, where, in its words, locals do not like seeing rental vehicles. Drive slowly, give way, and skip that road if you are unsure.
Your rental agreement decides where you can drive, whichever company you use. Read it before you head down any unpaved road.
Tips for booking
- Book the car when you book the flight. Late bookings can come up empty.
- If the dates are fixed, call Molokai Outdoors to confirm the booking and the pickup point.
- Peer-to-peer cars sometimes appear near the airport too. See Turo in Hawaii vs a rental car for how those work.
