Short answer: You still owe the ticket. The rental company usually finds out first, pays or forwards it, and adds its own admin fee to your card, so settle it yourself quickly.
Got a parking ticket in your Hawaii rental car? Here’s what actually happens: you’re still responsible for it, the rental company will almost certainly find out before you do, and they’ll add their own fee on top before charging your card, often without warning you first.
Why the rental company finds out automatically
The citation is written against the license plate, and the vehicle is registered to the rental company, not you. When the ticket goes unpaid past the response window, it routes back to the registered owner (the rental company), not to you directly. They then identify who had the car on that date from their own rental record and bill you, whether or not you ever saw the original citation.
What it actually costs
Hawaii’s parking fines vary by violation: routine infractions like exceeding a meter or parking in a signed no-parking zone typically run $35–$50, while more serious violations (blocking a disabled space, for example) can reach $500. On top of the citation itself, rental companies add their own administrative processing fee for handling it. Reported figures vary by company, generally somewhere in the $15–$50 range, so don’t assume a specific number without checking your own rental agreement.
How you’ll actually be charged
- Your card on file gets charged directly. Most rental companies don’t ask first: the fine plus their fee simply appears as a charge after the fact.
- Pay the citation yourself, fast, if you catch it first. Hawaii’s citations have a 21-day response window. Paying directly through the state’s own eTraffic Hawaii payment system before the rental company processes it can avoid their added fee entirely.
- Keep your receipt either way. If the rental company later tries to bill you for a citation you already paid, that receipt is your proof.
Some of the island’s most ticket-prone parking spots are ones we’ve already covered in detail. See the Lanikai Beach parking guide and Pearl Harbor parking guide for where enforcement is actually strict, not just theoretically possible.
