Short answer: Kihei Rent-A-Car is the standout in town, with 4.8 stars on more than 1,000 Google reviews. The shared Avis and Budget desk on South Kihei Road rates 4.3 for Avis, and most hotel desks in Wailea sit below 4 on small review counts. For most trips, picking up at Kahului Airport is still simpler.

A Kihei car rental can mean two different things: a company based in Kihei that meets you at the airport, or a small desk in town or inside a Wailea resort. Below is every car rental listing in Kihei and Wailea with its public Google rating and review count, pulled on October 20, 2026, plus what each option is actually good for.

Ratings and review counts are from each listing on Google Maps, checked October 20, 2026. A desk with fewer than 20 reviews can move a full star after a few new ones, so read those numbers loosely.

Kihei Rent-A-Car is the only Kihei company with both a large review count and a high rating. The resort desks are small, and their ratings rest on a handful of reviews.

In town or at the airport?

Kahului Airport has nine rental companies in one rental car center, on the official airport list. You land, take the tram, and drive to Kihei. That is the simplest choice if you want a car for the whole trip. See the full Kahului Airport car rental guide and the Google ratings for every Kahului desk.

A Kihei pickup makes sense in two cases:

  • You want the local company. Kihei Rent-A-Car is based at 96 Kio Loop, not at the airport. Its FAQ says its shuttle from Kahului Airport is free on rentals of 5 days or more, with a fee on shorter rentals, and arrival pickups run 8:30 AM to 10:00 PM. More detail in our Kihei Rent A Car review.
  • You only want a car for part of the trip. If you are staying in Kihei or Wailea for a few beach days, you can skip the car at first and book a day or two at a desk in town for the drives that need one. You will need a taxi or rideshare from the airport to get to Kihei first.

Either way, Hawaii charges a rental car surcharge tax of $7.50 per day in 2026, wherever you pick up. The state figures are on our Hawaii car rental statistics page.

Specialty rentals based in Kihei

  • Maui Roadsters rents reproductions of the 1957 Porsche 356 Speedster, two seats with a manual gearbox, for a half day (up to 6 hours) or a full day (up to 12 hours). Its site offers delivery to Kihei, Wailea and Makena for an extra charge.
  • Island EV Rentals rents convertible Jeeps and street-legal electric golf carts by the day or week, with pickup and delivery to condos and resorts. It asks for 24 hours notice.

How to pick

  • Car for the whole trip, easiest pickup: book at Kahului Airport and drive to Kihei.
  • Want a local company with a long track record: Kihei Rent-A-Car, and check the shuttle terms for your rental length.
  • Car for one or two days only: the Avis desk on South Kihei Road has the best rating of the in-town big-brand desks.
  • Something fun for a day: Maui Roadsters or Island EV.

Parking at the South Maui beaches is a separate question. See Ulua Beach parking in Wailea, and if you are still deciding whether you need a car at all, start with do you need a rental car on Maui.

South of Wailea in Makena, Maluaka Beach parking is split between two lots, and neither lists a fee.
