If you are flying into Maui, you are landing at Kahului Airport (OGG) — the island’s main hub. Here is what actually happens once you land and want a rental car.
Getting to the rental counters
The rental car center is not inside the terminal. It sits southwest of the main building, past the surface parking lot, at 101 Airport Access Rd. Most major companies — Dollar, Sixt, Hertz, Alamo, National, Budget, Enterprise, and Avis — are consolidated in this one facility, reached by a tram from the terminal (about a 6-minute ride). Follow the signs for the rental car tram once you clear baggage claim.
One exception worth knowing: Ace Rent a Car runs its own separate shuttle, not the consolidated tram. If you booked with Ace, look for their specific pickup point instead of following the main tram signs.
Which brands are actually here
Through Discover Cars, the companies bookable at Kahului include Dollar, Ace, and Sixt directly, with Hertz, Alamo, and National also generally available through their platform. If you are comparing rates, these are the brands you will actually be choosing between at this airport — not every rental company you might see mentioned in general Maui guides operates out of OGG.
One thing to check before you drive off
If the Road to Hana is anywhere on your itinerary: most rental agreements do allow the main paved route (Highways 36 and 360), but they explicitly prohibit the unpaved “back road” sections beyond Kipahulu. Driving there voids your rental agreement and most credit card or personal insurance coverage too — worth confirming with your specific rental company before you go, not after.
Not sure you need to rent at all? See the guide on whether you actually need a rental car on Maui first — it might save you the trip to the rental counter entirely.
