Short answer: The full loop is about 187 miles, 9 to 10 hours non-stop, but most standard rental agreements don’t allow the whole loop. Plan it as separate day trips.

How long does it take to drive around Maui? The short answer: driving the full geographic loop takes about 9 to 10 hours non-stop, covering roughly 187 miles. But that number hides the part that actually matters if you’re renting a car. Most standard rental agreements won’t let you drive the whole loop in one continuous trip.

The straight answer

Maui’s perimeter is about 187 miles. Driven non-stop, with no photo stops, no Road to Hana waterfalls, no Kahekili Highway detour, that’s 9 to 10 hours behind the wheel. Nobody actually drives it that way. With real stops, most people spread it across 1 to 3 days, usually as separate day trips from wherever they’re staying rather than one continuous loop.

Why your rental probably can’t do the full loop anyway

Here’s what most drive-time answers leave out: the southern stretch of Highway 31 (Piilani Highway) between Kipahulu and Ulupalakua is unpaved, and most rental agreements specifically prohibit driving it. It’s the road that would actually connect the Road to Hana side of the island to the south/upcountry side and close the loop. Long sections are single-lane, prone to rockslides and mud, and have no cell signal, which is exactly why rental companies exclude it. Drive it in a standard rental and break down or get stuck, and you’re covering the tow yourself.

The same restriction logic applies to Kahekili Highway on West Maui, another real, non-myth rental-agreement caveat. Practically, this means most renters end up doing two separate out-and-back trips instead of one loop: Road to Hana to Kipahulu and back, and (if you go) the Kahekili Highway side separately. Budget both as their own day, not one continuous drive.

How to actually plan your rental days around this

  • Road to Hana, round trip to Kipahulu: plan a full day. See the Road to Hana rental car guide for the road-specific caveats past Hana.
  • Kahekili Highway (West Maui): a separate full day if you want to drive it, not a quick add-on to another plan.
  • Don’t plan a literal one-day island circumnavigation. Even setting the rental restriction aside, 9-10 hours of non-stop driving with zero stops isn’t a real vacation day.
  • Check current road status before you commit a day to either drive: rockslides and closures happen on both routes with some regularity.

Check current conditions and closures on Hawaii DOT’s Maui lane closures page before heading out on either route.
