Short answer: There is free public beach parking, but only a limited number of resort beach-access stalls. Everything else is paid garages, so arrive early or plan to pay.
Kaanapali Beach parking is shaped by the fact that it is a public beach lined with resorts: paid garages everywhere, a small number of free spots, and a lot of confusion. Here is the short version for renters.
Is there free parking?
Yes, but not much. The beach is public, and local guides say the resorts along it must provide a limited number of free public beach-access stalls as a condition of their development permits. One local guide, kaanapalibeach.net, counts 196 such stalls across seven properties. I could not confirm that count from a county source, so treat it as a guide’s estimate. Another guide, kaanapali-beach.com, says each resort offers roughly 10 to 70 free spots and suggests trying several.
Whalers Village
Guides say Whalers Village has about 21 designated public beach-access stalls, separate from its paid garage. They also say many shops will validate parking for a purchase. Rules and validation hours change, so confirm at the garage before you rely on it.
County park lots
Local guides point to free county park lots at both ends of the beach: Kahekili Beach Park to the north and Hanakao‘o Beach Park to the south. They are a walk from the main resort stretch, but the guides describe the lots as easier to find a space in than the resort garages. If you are chasing a spot near Black Rock, expect a longer walk.
What Park Maui does and doesn’t cover
Park Maui is the county’s paid program for non-residents. As of October 2026, its FAQ lists only the Wailuku garage and the Kama‘ole I and III lots in Kihei as paid zones, not Kaanapali. Our Ulua Beach parking guide explains how that works. If a Kaanapali sign shows a different payment system, it belongs to the resort or shopping center, not Park Maui.
When to arrive
No official source gives a fill time. Guides recommend early mornings and weekdays for the free resort stalls, and suggest having a backup resort in mind. Midday on a weekend is the hard version of this problem.
Before you book a car at all
If you are staying in Kaanapali, you may not need a car for the whole trip. See whether you need a rental car on Maui, and the Kahului Airport car rental guide if you are flying in. Planning day trips north? Kahekili Highway is the road to know about, and how long it takes to drive around Maui sets realistic expectations.
